Bar owner (foreground), Jeff "Rocky" Ryan, oversees the building of his new bar, Rock's, located at 25 E. Springfield in Champaign, on Monday. Ryan hopes to open in a couple of weeks.

A new bar will open just outside of Campustown later this month.

The bar, Rock's, is located at 25 E. Springfield Ave. in Champaign. Managing co-owner Jeff Ryan said the bar will open Sept. 24 or 25. Because it is not located in Campustown, Ryan said they are not trying to appeal directly to the student population. Bar patrons must be 21 to enter.

Champaign residents Scott Cochrane and Dan Manolakes are co-owners.

"Our main appeal is food," Ryan said. "We'll have a kitchen open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.," he said.

Because it is serving food, Rock's will not begin carding patrons until approximately 9 p.m. As a restaurant, Ryan hopes his bar will appeal to all ages.

"We even offer a children's menu," Ryan said.

According to Ryan, Rock's will not offer live music, DJs or dance floors.

"We're a burger and beer joint," Ryan said.

Though not intended to be a sports bar, Rock's will host 15 TVs, including some facing a large patio on the north side of the building, which can seat 132 people. Ryan said he hopes University athletic events will bring in bigger crowds.

"Rock's will be a big supporter of University sporting events and the University itself," Ryan said.

Margaret Shyr, a graduate student in engineering, said the off-campus location will not deter her from going to the bar.

"I live off campus anyway, and I have seen Rock's while driving to campus. The location isn't really an issue for me," she said.
