Community comes together for vigil
More than 1,000 students, faculty and community members gathered in the Krannert Center's Great Hall on Thursday night to attend a vigil remembering the victims of Tuesday's atrocities. People came together through spoken word and song as the event showcased a mix of speakers such as Chancellor NancyCantor and performances by such groups as the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra and the Varsity Men's Glee Club.


Today's classes to be canceled from noon to 1 p.m.

Kam's not permitted to sell alcohol for four days
Because of two Champaign Municipal Code violations in March 2001, Kam's will not be permitted to sell alcohol from Sept. 21 to 24. Violations occurred when Kam's allowed a person younger than 21 to possess and consume alcohol on its premises on March 4 and 5, and again on March 22.


Illegitimate donation requests flood Illinois
As students and faculty begin to make charitable donations to causes aiming to help the victims of Tuesday's attacks, they should look into where their money is going. The Illinois Republican Party was alarmed to learn Thursday that people across Illinois have received illegitimate requests for donations.


Healey Street tenants to lose hotel space
Some tenants of Campus Property Management's unfinished Healey Street building might be moving out of their hotels this weekend, but they won't yet be moving into their apartments. CPM informed tenants they would need to move out of their hotels this weekend because all rooms were booked for Dads Day Weekend.


Dads Day events to continue as planned
Most Dads Day Weekend events are going on as planned, despite this week's crisis. The banquet will take place at the Illini Union starting at 6 p.m. A King Dad ‹ picked during a contest where students could nominate their fathers by writing a one-page essay ‹ will still be crowned as well.


University to hold memorial on Saturday
While Memorial Stadium might be filled with people this Saturday, they won't be there to see any football team play. The University administration has postponed the game, opting instead to hold a memorial and unity event in response to Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.


Aviation personnel not afraid to fly
Tuesday's atrocities left everyone confused, including the University's aviation professionals. No one really understands exactly how hijackers managed to threaten an airplane full of people using only small knives. Despite the terrorist attacks, aviation personnel said they are not worried about going back in the air.


Improvements planned for Campustown appearance, streets
Green Street through Campustown will likely close March 18, 2002 for repairs and will not re-open until the end of August, City of Champaign officials announced during a meeting Wednesday. The meeting Wednesday night was the second in a series of steps to reconstruct and enhance areas of Campustown in the Campustown Infrastructure Reconstruction and Streetscape Project.


Board of Trustees calls for speed-up in South Farms relocation
The University Board of Trustees, which met at the Chicago campus Wednesday and Thursday, approved a measure that called for a speed-up in the process to mobilize plans involving the South Farms relocation project. Already on the books was a plan to relocate the University South Farms to the south side of Windsor Road.
