Friends cheer on Kappa Delta Tau's Sarah Woolley, sophomore in LAS, during the Foxy Lady Contest on Wednesday night at Foellinger Auditorium.

Although representatives from 15 sororities weren't competing for the Miss America crown Wednesday night, the honor of being named Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity's Foxy Lady this year was enough for contestants at the fraternity's 31st annual Foxy Lady contest held at Foellinger Auditorium.

The contest provided a pageant-style atmosphere for its participants, complete with tuxedo-clad escorts, formal gowns, an audience full of cheering sorority members and an intermission performance by the a capella group No Strings Attached.

Participants were nominated by their respective houses to compete in the event.

Nikki Rhodes, sophomore in applied life studies and a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, said she enjoyed the opportunity to represent her sorority in the contest.

"I think it's a really good philanthropy idea … you get a chance to show what your house means to you," Rhodes said. "My favorite part was being picked to be a participant ... I'm honored that my chapter picked me."

Prior to the actual contest, participants were serenaded by the men of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and formally interviewed by a committee of various campus representatives.

Participants were required to give short speeches about their experiences in their respective sororities.

Eight finalists were then chosen and asked impromptu questions by the judges.

Danny Curtin, junior in ACES and Alpha Gamma Rho philanthropy chair, said the Foxy Lady contest has become popular over the years.

He said although the contest is just for fun, it's a big deal for the participants to have the opportunity to represent their houses.

Erin Nolley, sophomore in LAS and member of Sigma Kappa sorority, said she considers the event more fun than anything else.

"I think it's a very creative way to do something for charity," she said.

Nicole Edwards, senior in ACES and member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, won the contest.

All proceeds from ticket sales benefited the American Cancer Society.
