Erica Cobb, an undecided sophomore in LAS, described herself on the phone as black, wearing glasses and "kinda chunky." Her roommate Lakisha Harvey, sophomore in business, said Cobb is considerate and quirky. Shuronda Turner, the third roommate and sophomore in education, said Cobb has "no common sense."
There's a lot of love here, that's for damn sure.
Cobb said she loves living with her roommates.
"We met in college, but you would think that we've known each other for years because of the bond we have," she said, pulling at the thin gold chain around her neck. "For the most part we just sing and dance and jump around the house."
Beyonce had better watch out because these three girls put on performances of Destiny's Child songs good enough to make Jay-Z need to take a cold shower.
"It's all choreographed," said Harvey, who portrays Kelly Rowland.
She said they typically start off dancing in the living room, then move throughout the kitchen and usually end up on top of the breakfast bar.
"Erica's the member we always kick out," laughed Turner, who takes on the role of Beyonce Knowles.
Cobb admitted her roommates are the real music lovers, as her true passion lies in accounting.
"I've always loved numbers, and I've always loved the business atmosphere," she said. "Accounting is just a combination of both."
In addition to her dancing and schoolwork, Cobb also works an average of 17 to 25 hours a week at Gameday Sports an Illini sports apparel shop on Green Street in Campustown. Cobb said a typical Saturday shift during the fall puts her out of commission from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
"Since it's football season, we always have to work on Saturdays for 12 hours," she said. "By the time we finish preparing for different games and different events I really don't do much ... I'm not really a partier."
While the party scene has been "played out" for Cobb, she still enjoys going to the "show" (movies) and out to eat. And what better destination for her favorite Champaign meal than the local Steak 'n Shake. Cobb goes with a classic choice, the All-American Melt.
"It's a double cheeseburger with bacon, frisco sauce and all the other ingredients," she explained.
Cobb said the girls try to go to Steak 'n Shake as much as possible which is about once a week.
Still her roommates maintain a joking mentality when it comes to describing "Rudy Rose" their nickname for Cobb (a combination of Rudy from The Cosby Show and Rose from Golden Girls).
"She's a little off at times," Turner said. "It's funny to see someone so smart that doesn't get common stuff."
But what kind of common stuff was she talking about? Can openers? Flashlights? Proper hand shaking etiquette?
Apparently the answer lies as things often do in the canceled ABC television sitcom Family Matters.
Turner described a time when the three girls were watching the show on television and Steve Urkel played by the uncompromising talent Jaleel White made a joke with the line "horizontal polka" as the punchline. Turner and Harvey burst out laughing while Cobb sat silent and confused. When the girls explained it to her, Cobb reportedly said, "I really don't get it, where did that come from?"
Harvey also shared a story about a barndance that she went to with Cobb. The girls were hanging out inside the barn for about an hour and a guy told them that there were cows and sheep inside the barn with them. Cobb then jumped and asked excitedly, "Are there really cows inside?"
"We were like ... no," Harvey laughed.
Still, all in all, this innocence is what makes Cobb stand out from the drunk and horny college crowd. Cobb is very close with her family. She is the oldest of four children and she said that her sisters really look up to her and say, "Erica, I don't want to be exactly like you, but I look at you to be my role model and my best friend."
She also said her brother calls frequently, just to see how she's doing and when she's coming home next. Her mother and grandmother have also given her plenty of advice that Cobb goes back to for faith and guidance in her life.
"My mom always tells me, regardless of the grades you get, as long as I put forth all the effort that I have she's always gonna be proud of me because I'm making a step that a lot of teenage girls haven't," she said. "I'm proud of being strong. Things go on with everybody mentally, physically and financially, but regardless of what may happen, I don't give up."
