Champaign city council approves grants

Council approves two grants, addresses resident complint: The council approved two grants Tuesday — one for $20,000 to the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club and another for $40,000 to the Urban League of Champaign Development Corporation.

Mayor Schweighart said funds from the second grant would be used for building houses geared toward buyers with below-average incomes.

After the meeting, Champaign resident Catherine Hogue addressed the council to restate complaints made a few weeks earlier about students and others violating the "72-hour rule" for street parking in northeast Champaign.

Council member Tom Bruno said there should be more restrictions on street parking in that area to reduce the number of violations.

Bruno also announced that leaf pickup for Champaign would begin the week of October 27. He said the leaves must be in paper bags before they were collected.
