Councils angered over network

The Champaign City Council voted Tuesday to connect the city's computer network with the Champaign Public Library's network.

The connection will initially give the library access to satellite programming and the city's television channel for little or no cost. Council member Kathy Ennen said the connection would save the library money and hopefully promote the library as a part of the city.

Champaign resident John Johnson addressed the council, saying that northeast Champaign had become "a parking lot" for University students. Johnson encouraged the council to take action, saying he and other residents of the neighborhood have lost spaces that are historically theirs.

Ennen said after the regular meeting that she took offense to song lyrics sung by Jim Belushi on ABC's Monday Night Football. In the song, Ennen said, Belushi explicitly blamed the city of Champaign for the Chicago Bears' 4-12 season record.

"The Bears will be lucky to win four games this year in Chicago," joked council member Ken Pirok, who didn't think playing in Champaign was what hurt the Bears last season.
