Dead man found in van

A deceased man was discovered in a van parked on an Urbana street Tuesday morning.

A resident made a phone call around 10 a.m. and asked the Urbana Police Department to check the welfare of the man in the vehicle, said Lt. Michael Metzler. The van was parked at the 1400 block of West Beardsley Avenue, on the border of Urbana and Champaign.

"Because of the subject's state, we might consider that this was foul play," Metzler said. The cause of death had not been determined as of Tuesday afternoon, but an autopsy was scheduled for today, he said.

Two plumbers working at a residence on the street noticed the van Monday.

"That van was in a driveway all of yesterday (Monday)," said Alan Cole, one of the plumbers.

His co-worker, Travis Clark, said the van had been moved to the street by early Tuesday morning, when he began work.

The Urbana police had not released the identity of the deceased man as of Tuesday afternoon, pending notification of family members.
