Sophomore Brianna Knue practices with the women's tennis team Sept. 17 at the Atkins Tennis Center. Knue won the Flight 'C' title at the San Diego Invitational.

The Illinois women's tennis team returns to campus with not only one championship, but three titles.

Illinois senior Jennifer McGaffigan won the Flight 'A' singles tournament at the San Diego Invitational Sunday, knocking off Dita Haauerlandova of San Diego State 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

"Jenny showed amazing heart, to win two back-to-back tournaments," Illinois head coach Sujay Lama said. "She played like a tremendous warrior (Sunday)."

The senior wasn't the only Illini to dominate the tournament.

Freshman Isabel Jarosz defeated her elder Illinois teammate Cynthya Goulet 6-4, 6-4 to take the Flight 'B' singles title.

"This is a great start to her career," Lama said.

Both Jarosz and McGaffigan won titles at the Bronco Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., in early September.

The third champion of the weekend was sophomore Brianna Knue. The Illini downed Pepperdine's Lisa Sissler 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the Flight 'C' tournament to round out the title-winning trio.

Senior Tiffany Eklov also made an appearance in a finals tournament. The team's co-captain competed in the consolation finals of the Flight 'A' bracket, where she fell to Lauren Perl 6-7(4), 6-7(3).

McGaffigan won't have long to celebrate though. She will be joined by Eklov and Goulet at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., today.

"Going to San Diego first should help my performance at All-Americans," McGaffigan said.

McGaffigan is the lone Illini with experience at the All-American tournament. Eklov is making her first appearance in the singles portion of the tournament. Goulet and McGaffigan will join forces to compete in the doubles tournament.

"It's a good tournament," McGaffigan said. "There are good players there, so any win you get is a good win. But, it's just a really fun tournament."

Lama is also excited about the tournament, which is considered one of the three Grand Slams of college tennis. This year marks the first time in Illinois history that the women have had three individuals qualify for the tournament.

"This program has come a long way," Lama said. "The girls will have a great opportunity to measure themselves against the best."

The Illini are approaching the week as a learning experience as well.

"This will give (the women) an opportunity to learn and improve," Lama said. "This is a fun team. The have such potential this year. It's going to be a fun year."
