Illini plan to deviate from scouting report

Illinois outside hitter Jessica Belter (1) and middle blocker Shelly O'Bryan attempt to block against DePaul on Sept. 5. The team will play their third Big Ten match in Iowa City, Iowa tonight.

Teams playing on the road don't get much crowd support — crowds cheer for the opponent. For the Illinois volleyball team, that does not matter.

Illinois (10-2, 1-1) travels to Iowa (5-7, 0-2) and Minnesota (7-7, 0-2) this weekend, concentrating on their own play and not on that of the opponents.

"We can overplay the scouting report," Illinois senior middle blocker Lisa Argabright said. "Which we did against Wisconsin (during a 3-1 loss last Saturday)."

With the Illini's new mindset, the team sees its play as the deciding factor in matches, not the opponents.

"We have to go out and play our game because ... our play will put us over the edge," Illinois junior libero Lauren Harks said.

Illinois' game starts with defense and passing, as the Illini lead the conference in opponent hitting percentage (.151) and blocks (3.09). Offensively, Illinois will look to establish Argabright (3.09 kills) in the middle as the first option and then spread the ball around as five Illini average over two kills a game.

"The only thing we have control over is our effort and our consistency," Illinois head coach Don Hardin said.

Illinois still realizes that scouting reports are necessary in Big Ten volleyball; they just have to learn when to deviate from them.

"A scouting report is a tool for how things can go," Hardin said. "Any superstar player can have an off night and someone not in (the scouting report) can catch on fire."

"We're not adjusting to changes," Argabright said. "We were not picking up on a hitter that is doing well. Instead we were focusing on a player in the report."

Illinois will have Minnesota senior outside hitter Cassie Busse and Iowa junior outside hitter Laura Simpson in the scouting report this weekend. Busse, a second team All-American last year, is the leader of the Minnesota team. She averages 4.38 kills and 1.92 blocks. Simpson spearheads the Iowa offensive attack with 3.85 kills.

Both Iowa and Minnesota have had a troubling start this year and are winless in conference. Minnesota began the season ranked No. 6 in the nation. But now with a .500 record, the Golden Gophers are not ranked.

Minnesota has played one of the toughest schedules in the country, and has lost four matches to teams in the top 25.

Iowa has been unable to win more than two consecutive games and are currently on a three game losing streak.

"We know enough about this season that either team could play very well on a given day," Hardin said. "It's very unpredictable."
