Champaign Police chief could be named soon

A month after interviewing the final five candidates for chief of the Champaign Police Department, the City of Champaign is completing its reference checks and hopes to name the new chief soon.

"We think we will have an announcement by mid-next week," said city director of personnel services Chris Bezruki, who added that the city should have a news conference when that happens.

The announcement would end a five-month search for the new chief of police, which has had as many as 67 candidates.

The five finalists are Mary Bounds of the Cleveland Police Department, James Carmody of the Port Huron Police Department in Michigan, Robert Finney of the Carbondale Police Department, Raymond Schultz of the Albuquerque Police Department and Stephen Smith of the Thunderbolt Police Department in Georgia.
