Men's cross country finishes 8th at NCAA Regional
The future looks bright for the Illinois men’s cross country team, but the potential could not come together during the 2003 season that ended Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Stillwater, Okla.
“Just like any sport, as you mature physically and experience-wise they’ll have the maturity,” said Illinois head cross country coach Paul Pilkington. “We’re young. Out of that group that went to the Region we only lose (senior) Brent (Pfeiffer) and the guys know what they need to do as far as developing further.”

Illini basketball hosts Jammers in final exhibition
The Illinois men’s basketball team continues to build toward hosting Western Illinois for their regular season opener Saturday. Tonight at 7 p.m., the Illini will play the Spotlight Jammers in their final exhibition game as they continue to prepare for the Leathernecks.
“It’s a buildup, just like going from the Orange and Blue (Scrimmage) to the Illinois All-Stars and now to the Spotlight Jammers,” said junior center Nick Smith. “It’s just another step. We’re not expecting to be great, but we’re expecting to improve quite a bit.”

Illini successful in final tune-up
The next time the Illini women take the court the end result will matter, this afternoon against the Reebok Lady Stars was the last chance to tweak the offense and to experiment with the starting five.
The Reebok Lady Stars came to Champaign to compete with the Illini women’s basketball team Sunday afternoon. In a final tune-up, the Illini put down the Lady-Stars 78-45.

Volleyball runs over Badgers
No matter what happens, Illinois expects victory.
Even with the third game against Wisconsin in extra points when 5-foot-8-inch junior defensive specialist Kathleen Bazzetta had to play the front row for the first time this season, as the Illini had used up all its substitutions.
Even when the Badgers set the ball to junior Sheila Shaw, their best hitter, with no one blocking her.
Illinois expected to dig out Shaw’s attack but she never gave the Illini the chance. She hit the ball out of bounds to end the match.
The No. 25 Illini (21-5, 12-4) never thought of anything but a win against the No. 23 Badgers (18-9, 10-6) as Illinois won in three games (30-19, 30-26, 34-32) Saturday night at Huff Hall in front of a season high crowd of 2,438.

Singles players bow out of tourney
As the first day of competition wrapped up on Saturday at Atkins Tennis Center, all of the members of the Illinois men’s tennis team who entered the Northwestern Mutual USTA Challenger as individual amateurs had been eliminated.
“I’m obviously disappointed that I lost,” said junior Chris Martin. “There was one break in the last match, so it certainly shows that I can hang (in there).”
