After strong showings in their first three meets, the Illini men’s track team hopes to maintain its success this weekend, in their last indoor home meet.

The Illini will host the Carle-Health Illini Classic Saturday at noon. Joining the Illini at the Armory track will be Iowa, Iowa State, Indiana State and the Indiana Invaders club team.

Illinois performed well at last weekend’s Wisconsin Elite Invitational.

“Last week was our toughest meet of the season so far,” said head coach Gary Wieneke. “But we did well. We have been consistent with our improvement, and we have been competitive all season.”

Senior Babatunde Ridley, who has made strong showings for the Illini this season, said that individual successes inspire the rest of the team.

“Anyone who steps up, whether it’s a freshman or senior, is a leader,” Ridley said. “Everybody else feeds off that energy and hopefully they will step up as well.”

This weekend will feature tough competition for the Illini. Conference rival Iowa finished second overall in the Big Ten in last year’s outdoor season.

Junior Sherman Armstrong, who was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the second time in three weeks, will also face tough competition.

Armstrong will be running the 60-meter hurdles against Indiana State’s Aubrey Herring. Herring finished second in the nation and also broke the Armory track record running 7.70 seconds in the event last year.

Wieneke said his team must continue to perform well as the season winds down.

“Everything starts moving fast now,” Wieneke said. “There are only a few weeks left before Big Tens, and we need to keep it up.”

During the meet there will be a special ceremony at 1:15 p.m. in honor of late men’s track and field coach Bob Wright.

The lighted boards featuring the Illinois school record holders for men’s and women’s track and field were given to the University by Wright’s family in his memory.
