McBride fuels Illini By Memphis Memphis’ black road jersey has blue and silver camoflage, and it did a great job in the first half of hiding the basket. The only player seeing through the fatigues was Illinois freshman guard Richard McBride. His career-high 22 points led No.14 Illinois over Memphis 74-64 on Saturday in Assembly Hall.
In the Illini’s first game without sophomore guard Deron Williams, who broke a jaw Thursday against Maryland-Eastern Shore, Memphis head coach John Calipari saw the Illini come together as a team while having to play without their guard and it gave the Illini something to prove on the court.

Illini fly by Pepperdine If the transitive property can be applied to college basketball, the Illinois women not only beat Pepperdine 84-41 Sunday at the Assembly Hall, but they also beat No. 1 UConn.
Illinois (4-4) mystified Pepperdine (2-4) with a swarming defense and a crisp offense en route to recording their third straight victory by a margin of 28 points or more. In doing so, the Illini managed to outdo Connecticut, who outscored Pepperdine by 29 points on Dec. 5, 14 less than the Illini.

Forwards provide answers As Illinois sophomore forward James Augustine left Saturday’s post-game press conference, Augustine muttered to junior center Nick Smith, “I usually don’t get any questions.”
Augustine became the answer man more than just in Saturday’s press conference. The 6-foot-10 post presence scored 21 points and helped the No. 14 Illinois men’s basketball team defeat Memphis 74-64 Saturday to improve to 6-2 on the season.
