Men's club soccer wins national championship
Hard work and determination were exactly what the Illini needed as the men’s club soccer team won its first national championship since 1986.
“It was crazy,” sophomore midfielder Todd Mayer said. “There were probably 800 people there — a lot of them were teams we had played and fans we had picked up because we play with a lot of class and don’t really trash talk. A lot of people were rooting for us. When we won, everyone was swarming the field.”

Volleyball takes on NCAA at home
After a one-year hiatus from the NCAA tournament, the Illinois volleyball team is back in full force.
“I’m really excited, still nervous, still shaking,” Illinois junior Lauren Harks said. “We’re just really happy to play another weekend at home and be able to play in front of a home crowd for another weekend.”
The Illini hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament in 2001, when they bested Missouri 3-1 in the first round, before falling to Arizona by the same 3-1 score. The Illini will host rounds one and two of the 2003 NCAA Volleyball tournament.

Men's basketball records 3-0 record over break
While junior guard Luther Head and redshirt freshman forward Aaron Spears continue to prepare to contribute significantly to the Illini, the No. 12 Illinois men’s basketball team can turn to junior forward Roger Powell.
During Saturday’s 75-60 win over Temple, Powell recorded his second consecutive double-double — the second of his Illinois career.
“Last year, I had some down times,” Powell said. “But for our team to be good, I have to come play every day. That’s what I’m focused on.”
Powell scored 19 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Ten rebounds accompanied Powell’s 19 points in his season-high 31 minutes played.

Wild West Coast leaves women's basketball at 1-3
The Illini women’s basketball team left for their two-game West Coast trip with lofty aspirations.
“We want W’s,” senior Aminata Yanni said prior to the Illini’s departure for California. “We want to come back undefeated.”
Instead, the Illini return home to Champaign today twice defeated. The Illini’s losing streak slid to three games after losses to UC-Santa Barbara and UCLA over the weekend. Illinois (1-3) lost 67-61 to No. 11 Louisiana Tech on Nov. 24 in Champaign to start the skid.

Men's Tennis
Former tennis star falls short of win
Former Illinois standout Rajeev Ram is taking his tennis prowess to another level. Ram and partner Brian Baker ousted No. 3 seeds Josh Goffi and Tripp Phillips 6-2, 7-6(7) from the semifinals of the Northwestern Mutual USTA Challenger.
“I felt like we pretty much dominated the match at the beginning,” Baker said. “We just had a little bit of a hiccup, actually a big hiccup. It’s not too many times that you’re up two breaks, and lose serve three times.”
