Baseball team puts it all together

Feeding off strong performances by its pitching staff, the Illinois baseball team got back into the swing of things this weekend at Illinois field, winning three games in a four-game set with Michigan.

Junior Mitch Walk posted a career-high 12 strikeouts in a complete-game 7-4 win Sunday to give the Illini the series edge.

The southpaw said it was a combination of the Illini's solid hitting and pitching that carried the team.

Victories over Michigan put Illinois at top of Big Ten standings

Timely hitting plus timely pitching equal first place in the Big Ten.

With the two elements coming together, the Illinois baseball team took three of four games from Michigan, including a 7-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Illinois Field.

"We have been taking three out of four and four out of four games the last few weeks," Illinois coach Richard "Itch" Jones said, "and you have to take your hat off to the players. They have been coming up with timely hitting and pitching."

Scrimmage has Turner looking up

The bubble brought out the best in the Illini Friday night.

After a lackluster scrimmage last week, the Illinois football team had a much-improved scrimmage Friday night under the bubble in Memorial Stadium.

Illinois head coach Ron Turner said he saw great improvements in the team's attitude compared to last Saturday's scrimmage.

Illini remain undefeated in Big 10

The Illinois men's tennis team remained undefeated in conference play after it defeated Penn State and Ohio State this weekend at the Atkins Tennis Center.

The wins put the No. 6 Illini at 16-3 overall and at 7-0 in the Big Ten. Associate head coach Bruce Berque, who is filling in while head coach Craig Tiley is at the Davis Cup, said he is satisfied with the team's overall play this weekend.
